Parent Conversation Guide (5.19.21)

Passage: Lev. 23 & 25; Mark 1; Luke 5

Overview:
I WISH I HAD____________________, because if I did, live would be SOOOOO much easier. This phrase is one of Satan's biggest traps for us as followers of Jesus. Stress to get something done or achieve something often leads us to this belief. Stress is part of our lives in this fallen world. No matter what stage of life we are in, stress always seems to find us. There is stress that comes from outside of our control and forces itself on us and then there is internal stress and pressure that we place on ourselves. How do we handle that stress? I believe God’s Word has a very clear path in regards to handling stress, specifically the internal stress that we place on ourselves. In this week’s conversation, we’re going to see how God created us to have “breathing room” in our lives and how Jesus modeled that breathing room for us to follow in His footsteps.

What do we want our teens to know?
  • We want our teens to know that they have choices. They do not need to be enslaved by the pressure they put on themselves.
  • We want our teens to understand that God has a better plan for their lives than an over-scheduled, over-stressed, and over-strained life.

What do we want our teens to do?
  • Don’t put things off until the last minute
  • Learn to say no (Sacrifice what might be good for something that is better).
  • Fight for time alone
  • Plan for time alone
  • Un-plug
  • Give it away

Ways to follow up with your teen this coming week:
  • This is an amazing conversation to have together as a value. Talk together about what is important to your family and why. Write down those family values and put them somewhere you can easily see them. Those conversations will help direct your steps in what you choose to do and not do as a family.
  • Talk together as a family how you (together) are going to create breathing room to allow for more time together as a family.
  • Ask your teen(s) this question on a regular basis: Were you able to create some “breathing room” today to be refreshed spiritually?
