From Shechem to Bethel: A Journey of Spiritual Renewal

What does it look like when our spiritual lives go cold, and what does it take to find our way back? Drawing from Genesis 35, we explore one of the most honest and searching questions a believer can face: are we simply going through the motions, or are we truly walking with God? Jacob and his family arrive at a moment of crisis after a chapter filled with deception, violence, and moral failure. Yet God does not abandon them. Instead, He calls them back to Bethel, the place where He first revealed Himself, and in doing so, He shows us that spiritual renewal is not about finding something new but about returning to what is true. The passage challenges us to examine whether our religious habits, church attendance, prayer, Bible reading, have become ends in themselves rather than pathways to actually knowing God. There is a striking difference between spiritual activity and spiritual renewal, and Genesis 35 draws that line with great clarity. We are invited to ask ourselves honestly: when we sing familiar hymns, when we open Scripture, when we bow our heads in prayer, are we encountering the living God, or are we simply fulfilling a routine? The answer to that question may be the most important thing we wrestle with today.
